The Korean Cultural Centre Australia(Director: Sunmin Yoon, hereinafter “the Centre”) collaborated with the OzAsia Festival in Adelaide, South Australia, from 7 to 9 November, to present a special program promoting Korean webtoons. The OzAsia Festival is the largest Asian cultural festival in Australia, renowned for its vibrant celebration of literature, music, performance, and visual arts from across Asia.
As part of this year’s festival, the Centre invited Joo Dong-geun, the creator of the globally acclaimed webtoon All of Us Are Dead, which was also adapted into a hit Netflix series. Joo participated as a panelist in the session titled A Brave New Space, where he engaged in an in-depth discussion with Malaysian-Australian comic artist Stephen Kok and Hong Kong-Australian manga artist Queenie Chan about the evolution of the webtoon and comic industries, as well as their creative processes.
In addition, Joo hosted a live drawing session titled Drawn To Life, where he interacted directly with local audiences. The event was fully booked in advance, demonstrating strong interest from both families and local webtoon fans. Participants had the opportunity to draw key characters On-jo and Cheong-san from All of Us Are Dead alongside the artist himself. Outstanding artworks were selected in both the children’s and adult categories, and winners received special acrylic art blocks featuring All of Us Are Dead characters.
Director Sunmin Yoon of the Korean Cultural Centre Australia stated, “We are delighted to collaborate once again with the OzAsia Festival, the largest Asian cultural festival in Australia. We will continue to expand opportunities for direct engagement between Korean creators and Australian audiences, and to promote the diversity and creativity of Korean content and literature.”
The Centre plans to continue introducing a wide range of Korean cultural contents, including webtoons, through collaborations with major festivals and cultural events across Australia. |
