A special cultural programme will introduce audiences to the meaning of jipbap (집밥), traditional Korean ingredients, and the culinary heritage that continues to shape everyday life in Korea. The Korean Cultural Centre Australia (KCCAU) will present “Jipbap, Mr Yoons’ Korean Home Cooking” on Friday, 7 August 2026, offering audiences an opportunity to explore the cultural significance of Korean home cooking and its role in preserving traditions, family connections and shared experiences. Venue: Korean Cultural Centre Australia (Ground Floor, 255 Elizabeth St, Sydney) The event will explore the concept of jipbap (집밥) — a Korean term referring to everyday home-cooked meals — and its broader cultural meaning as an expression of care, connection and Korean culinary heritage. Through a food talk session and live cooking demonstrations, participants will gain insight into the ingredients, techniques and traditions that define Korean home cooking. The programme will introduce key ingredients commonly used in Korean cuisine, including their culinary applications and nutritional values, while demonstrating how they are incorporated into traditional home-style dishes. A key focus of the programme will be jang (장), a range of traditional Korean fermented sauces that form the foundation of Korean cuisine. Participants will learn about the characteristics, uses and differences between various types of jang, and discover how these essential ingredients contribute to the distinctive flavours of Korean food. The event will be presented by Dr Sunmin YOON, Director of the Korean Cultural Centre Australia, and Daegwan YOON, Chef to the Consul-General of the Republic of Korea in Sydney. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of Korean culture and cultural exchange, Dr YOON will share insights into the meaning and significance of jipbap, exploring how home cooking reflects Korean values, traditions and everyday life. Chef YOON will share his professional expertise in Korean cuisine through practical demonstrations and insights into traditional ingredients and culinary techniques. Together, the two presenters will offer audiences a unique exploration of jipbap from both cultural and culinary perspectives, highlighting the role of food in preserving cultural identity and fostering meaningful connections between communities. Through initiatives such as this, the Korean Cultural Centre Australia continues to support cultural exchange and promote greater understanding and appreciation of Korean culture in Australia.
