Korean Puppetry Comes to the Sydney Opera House
- Korean Cultural Centre Australia presented Cookies, Ann, Cream, an original production exploring climate change and ecological challenges

SYDNEY, NSW – 19 October 2026
The Korean Cultural Centre Australia (Director: Dr Sunmin Yoon, hereinafter ‘KCCAU’), presented four performances of Trunk Theatre’s Cookies, Ann, Cream in collaboration with the Sydney Opera House on 8 and 9 October. The performances formed part of Wild Things, the first International Kids Festival hosted by the Sydney Opera House, and were supported by the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE) as part of the “Touring K-Arts” project.

Set in Antarctica, Cookies, Ann, Cream is an original production that combines puppetry, objects, shadow and light to tell its story. The production follows Ann on a journey to Antarctica in search of meteorites, where encounters with unfamiliar creatures prompt questions about what truly matters. Through this journey, the work explores climate change and ecological challenges, highlighting the importance of nature and all living things.

Following the performances, audiences were invited to see and touch real meteorites collected in Antarctica during an interactive program organised in collaboration with the Korea Polar Research Institute. The experience gave children and families a tangible connection to the Antarctic setting of the production.

A post-performance talk and Q&A with the artists involved in the production gave audiences a closer insight into the creative process and the ideas behind the work. The discussion also offered an opportunity to gauge local audiences’ interest in the production’s distinctive Antarctic setting and its exploration of climate change and ecological challenges.

Dr Sunmin Yoon, Director of KCCAU, said, “Presenting Cookies, Ann, Cream at the Sydney Opera House was a valuable opportunity to share a distinctive example of Korean performing arts with Australian audiences. We look forward to presenting more Korean productions that combine artistic quality with meaningful themes.”

Through partnerships with arts and cultural institutions across Australia, KCCAU will continue to bring Korean performing arts to wider audiences and foster greater appreciation of Korea’s diverse cultural offerings.
